One o f these p r o d u c t s i s " c r e a t i o n and v a l u a t i o n systems" which they d e s c r i b e as computer systems "capable of c r e a t i v e work i n such areas a s music, a r t ( p a i n t i n g , s c u l p t u r e , a r c h i t e c t u r e ) , l i t e r a t u r e (essays, n o v e l s , p o e t r y ) , and mathematics, and a b l e to e v a l u a t e the work of humans" (and presumably the work of o t h e r " c r e a t i o n systems"). " C r e a t i o n " and " v a l u a t i o n " i n the a r t s are discussed t r a d i t i o n a l l y i n terms o f " d e s i g n " and " c r i t i c i s m " . I n t h i s paper, we r e v i e w some of the work we have done to p r o v i d e a b a s i s f o r the development of systems ( a l g o r i t h m s ) capable o f d o i n g d e s i g n and c r i t i c i s m in th e a r t s .
